Several Hurt In Overnight Connector Crash

January 3, 2006

A carload of city men were injured, one seriously, when the car they were in slammed into a brick wall at the end of the Lowell Connector early this morning.

The car's front end crumpled and burst into flames when it hit the brick wall in front of 492-494 Gorham St. about 1:30 a.m.

Driver Joao Medina, 29, of 14 Robinson Street, Lowell, was flown by medical helicopter to Boston Medical Center where he is listed in fair condition.

Passengers Alexander Gorman, 22, of 109 Bellvue Street and Mario Pereira, 29, of 15 Meadow Drive, both of Lowell, were less seriously injured and were transported to Lowell General Hospital and Saints Memorial Medical Center.

Deputy Superintendent William Taylor said speed appears to be a factor in the crash. Investigators are looking to whether alcohol also was a factor.
